Let’s reflect and face some facts: how many times did you buy a product because a friend recommended it to you? Or how many times did you meet someone new through someone in your network?

We are continuously getting referred to new products, travel destinations, relationships and experiences by our network and we mostly value these more than any form of content we consume coming from strangers.

The same is true for companies that are hiring: referrals are 5x more effective and 55% faster than hiring someone via career websites. This is why companies love referrals but only 25% of candidates are leveraging their professional connections to get referrals

In this article, we cover six tips on how to get more referrals for jobs at tech companies.

6 tips to get more job referrals

In order to become successful at getting referrals, you need some basic understanding of how to network and why you need to HUSTLE in order to get them:

1. Hitlist: create a hit list of companies to work for

Make a hit list of companies to work for and decide which roles are best for you. Select the right company size, find roles aligned to your experience and make sure to determine the locations you consider to work.

2. Unique: find a unique thing you have in common

Hit up your network to get introduced to individuals or find individuals in your network with whom you have something in common. Filter on social media for people working at companies on your hitlist (in your desired location) with whom you have connections or something in common

3. Start: start engaging mentioning this unique common thing

Always reach out to others by showing what you know about them or a topic you know they have affinity with. The unique common thing you discovered in step two, is a great element to lead with as it establishes a direct connection.

4. Tailor: tailor a value proposition to the other person

You want to get a referral, which basically means you are asking for a favour. In order to get that favour, you need to mention what is in it for them. People working at tech companies often get a referral bonus, hence stating their help will result in you asking them for a referral and they getting a potential bonus, is a good value proposition.

5. Lead: lead up with next steps and have a call to action

Many conversations end because it’s unclear who is going to take the next steps. Always include a call to action or a next step at the end of your message that clearly indicates who will take the next step.

6. Engage: be persistent and follow-up

People have a busy agenda and it’s absolutely normal they might not come back to you instantly. Engage with their content and be persistent – don’t only focus on what you are trying to obtain, show genuine interest and they will follow-up.
