What does the marketing funnel have in common with job search?
Before you might decide I am crazy, let’s take a step back. What’s a marketing funnel?
A marketing funnel describes your customer’s journey with you.
From the initial stages when someone learns about your business, to the purchasing stage, marketing funnels map routes to conversion and beyond.
Sounds quite formal. The TL;DR is that a marketing funnel helps customers to get inspiration and follow steps to deciding which product to buy.
So why the heck does this matter for a job search? Well searching a job is not that different, once we consider ‘the job’ the product and ‘the job applicant’ the customer, it looks a bit like this:
- Inspiration: Your initial stages looking for an industry or potential company
- Consideration: Making a list of companies you might work for
- Conversion: Applying for a role and getting the role
- Loyalty: Influenced by your manager and company’s culture
And why does all of this matter?
Well, while marketing is often influencing you to buy a product, you can still use the same principles in order to help yourself find a product or job you actually want to buy or do.
Let’s break this down:
Job Search Funnel: Inspiration to find an industry and company
Are you ready to kick off your job search? The first step is getting inspired! Chances are, you already have an idea of which industry you want to work in. Now, it’s time to discover the top companies in that field that will take your career to new heights.
But with so many resources out there, it can be tough to know where to start. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! We’ve handpicked some of the best resources to help you get started on your job search journey:
- Welfound (former Angellist)
- Topstartups.io
- Y Combinator
- ‘Top xxx Companies Lists’
Filter these websites for companies in your industry and make a list of all the companies that are within your parameters (location, industry, size).
Do not make snap decisions, make sure to have a broad look: you want to get inspiration, not make a decision.
Put them all in an Excel sheet, this will be your ‘hit list’ moving forward.
Job Search Funnel: Consideration for a company or role
Now it is time to be critical. Within your newly created resource, assess all the companies based on their description, social media and company website. Remove every company you hate or you clearly do not want to work for.
This can be the case if the company is doing something against your personal values or you feel you won’t be a good cultural fit. Try to be bold but be rational. Some companies you can simply not assess from a first look, keep them on the list to evaluate them later.
Your hit list will now be a list of companies you consider.
Job Search Funnel: Conversion to get the role
In phase 3, you are looking for conversion. This means, you are looking for a product to buy or a role to apply for. It’s time to go and have a look at all the roles that are open at the companies you consider.
Scan the website of the companies and add links to the roles you consider on your hitlist. These are the products you want to buy or the roles you want to apply for.
This resource will allow you to apply for tens of roles in a minimum amount of time. You will just need to adjust your resume template in order to align with the job description and apply.
The goal here is simple: apply for roles at scale and hopefully land interviews which is in our case ‘conversion’.
Job Search Funnel: Loyalty for the culture and manager
Lastly, we want to check during our job interviews if we can become an ‘advocate’ or ‘loyal customer’. Loyalty comes from good experiences with brands and products.
For your interview it means, you assess:
- Your future manager: is this someone you can be loyal to and work for?
- Your future culture: is this culture aligned with mine so I can truly advocate for it?
- Your interview process: is the interview process one I would recommend to others?
You want to assess these three points during the interview session as it will most likely determine your experience once you join the company.
Never join a company if you have the feeling you can not be an advocate for what they are doing.
So what’s next in your job search
