Events expand your network

Events and meetups are an excellent opportunity to meet new people and expand your network. Most of our stronger connections, we have met initially in-person.

By attending events, you can connect with professionals in your industry and learn about their experiences, challenges and successes. You never know who you might meet and what opportunities they could offer you.

When you expand your network, you increase the likelihood of finding a job opportunity that aligns with your skills and interests.

Learn from experts

In-person events and meetups are also an excellent opportunity to learn from industry experts. No matter the size of an event, there is always something to learn from others.

On bigger events you might learn from keynote speakers and panel discussions, while at a small meetup you have the opportunity to share ideas with peers.

You will meet new people, but you will most likely also take home:

  • New trends
  • Best practices
  • Emerging technologies

All of these can give you a competitive edge when you are applying for your next role.

Multiple of the answers I have given to interview questions such as: What do you see as the opportunities in this industry’ or What do you see as threats in this industry’ came from discussions during meetups.

Showcase your skills

On the other side of the coin, events and meetups also allow you to showcase your skills and expertise. For example, many of our Preppally Programs I actually sold by inspiring people at events. While it might seem daunting, it’s never a bad idea to be a keynote speaker at an event – even if it’s just to sell yourself.

Events often feature opportunities to share your knowledge and expertise through presentations, discussions or panels. By participating in these, you can demonstrate your abilities and attract the attention of potential employers.

It also helps to build your personal brand and establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry.

Opportunity to showcase your skills

Meet potential employers

Companies attending events or meetups most likely have a ‘hidden’ agenda. They are either trying to increase their awareness, drive new sales or find new talent.

This makes in-person events and meetups an excellent opportunity to meet potential employers face-to-face. You can connect with hiring managers and recruiters, while learning about their organization and job opportunities.

It’s also a good opportunity to connect, showcase your skills, leave a positive impression and use it as a hook in your follow up communication when applying for a role.

Meeting potential employers in person can be more effective than submitting a resume online. You establish a personal connection and stand out amongst job seekers.

Build relationships during meetups

Meetups drive serendipity.

If you don’t know yet what serendipity means, let me help you here:

Serendipity is finding valuable outcomes while not looking for it.

It’s like fate but more positive. In order to increase serendipity – or your chances of finding something valuable – you need to go out there.

The more interactions you have, the higher the likelihood you will find valuable outcomes.

In-person events and meetups are always an amazing serendipity catalysator. And you should use them to build meaningful relationships.

By building relationships with people in your industry, you can  stay informed about job opportunities and gain valuable insights into the job market.

You can also use these relationships to collaborate on projects, share knowledge and expertise, and explore new opportunities.

Building relationships takes time and effort, but it can pay off in the long run by providing you with access to a network of professionals who can help you achieve your career goals.
