Summary on how to answer during job interviews
- Research the company and its products/service
- Prepare answers to common interview questions
- Highlight relevant experience and achievements
- Be proactive and take the initiative
- Show enthusiasm and passion for the role
1. Research the company and its products/services
It might sound cliché, but 90% of your job interview is done before the interview itself. This is very similar to doing an exam at school. It’s important to show that you have a genuine interest in the company and its offerings.
This can be demonstrated through informed questions and a clear understanding of how the company’s products or services fit into the larger market. Take some time to review the company’s website, social media profiles, and any relevant news articles to get a sense of its mission, values, and current projects.
When having an interview, you need to realise that the interviewer is investing time in you – the interviewer is often an employee that will closely work with you. By preparing, you respect their time.
2. Prepare answers to common job interview questions
While every interview will be unique, there are certain questions that tend to come up frequently in marketing and sales interviews. These may include questions about your experience, your approach to problem-solving, and your ability to work in a team.
Practise your responses to these questions beforehand so that you can deliver them confidently and smoothly during the actual interview.
Think for example about behavioural questions such as ‘Give an example of…’. In our programs we cover more than 200 interview question examples and how to answer them.
3. Highlight relevant experience and achievements
Marketing and sales roles often require a blend of technical skills and interpersonal abilities.
Make sure to emphasise any experience or achievements that demonstrate your ability to create and execute successful marketing campaigns, generate leads, or close sales. Use specific examples and quantify your results whenever possible to illustrate the impact you’ve had in the past.
Stating you sold X million worth of product at company Y by doing Z is more impactful during a job interview than using generic terms such as ‘I was selling at company Y.
Example:
When I was working at company Y, I sold X million in products by being a trusted advisor to my clients. I made sure to build strong relationships and understood when there was important seasonality for my clients.
By building relationships and understanding their needs, I was able to identify gaps and potential for our product to create value for my clients.
4. Be proactive and take the initiative
Companies like Google, Meta, and Amazon value candidates who are proactive and able to take the initiative to get things done.
Think about ways you can demonstrate this quality during the interview, whether it’s by asking insightful questions or offering suggestions for ways to improve the company’s products or processes.
Whenever I was interviewing, I often asked questions in line with ‘how would you monetise product X’ or ‘where do you think product Y can improve’. Candidates coming up with proactive examples, showcase they have done due diligence and stand out.
5. Show enthusiasm and passion for the role
Marketing and sales roles can be fast-paced and demanding, so it’s important to show that you have the energy and drive to excel in the position. Express your enthusiasm for the role and the company, and let your passion for marketing and sales shine through in your responses.
Whatever question you answer during an interview, showcase your love for the company and the role. Leave out any external doubts.
Overall, the key to success in a marketing and sales job interview is to be well-prepared, confident, and authentic.
