Tactic 1: Do your research online

Before you even begin salary negotiation, it’s essential to have a good understanding of what the market rate is for the role you’re applying for. Use resources like salary databases, industry reports, and even LinkedIn to get a sense of what others in similar positions are earning. This will help you to set a realistic and informed target for your salary negotiation.

Websites like levels.fyi, Glassdoor and others can help you to get an idea of the salary range in your region. Salaries are getting more transparent, so often a job post will mention the salary already. If that’s a good thing or not, I leave in the middle for now.

Tactic 2: Know how much your experience is worth

In addition to understanding the market rate, it’s also crucial to have a clear understanding of your own worth and value. And you are worth a lot!

Consider your skills, experience, unique qualifications, past experience and keep in mind they have already made a decision: they want you. Having a solid sense of your own value and what you can contribute to the company, will help you during the negotiation of your salary and compensation. Be confident and assertive.

Tactic 3: Make your case using unique elements

When you negotiate your salary, be prepared to make a strong case for why you deserve a higher salary and keep in mind your unique elements. Include highlighting your specific skills, experience, achievement, success and how you can add value to the company.

Also make sure to keep into consideration what you are giving up in order to start this new position. For example: stock options, a potential promotion, certain benefits. When you want more compensation, make sure to provide a ‘package’ of value you bring to and things you give up for your new company.

Tactic 4: Stay flexible the whole time

While it’s important to have a clear target in mind, it’s also essential to be open to salary negotiation and to be willing to find a middle ground. Consider other elements of the job offer, such as benefits, vacation time, stock, and other perks, and be willing to negotiate for these if a higher salary isn’t possible.

There is beauty in being a strong personality, but it also shouldn’t become an annoyance to the parties involved. In the end, they also look at how much you want to work for the company and how excited you are about the opportunity. Make sure it doesn’t look like you do not care about intrinsic motivation by focusing too much on financial rewards.

During your whole negotiation: be professional, be respectful and love the company. Above all, it’s essential they still want to hire you. Remember, if you are still negotiating the compensation, the deal is not done yet. If you are ‘overdoing’ it, it might cost you a new exciting opportunity. Avoid confrontational language and be willing to listen to the employer’s perspective. By maintaining a positive and respectful attitude, you’ll be more likely to find a mutually beneficial solution.

Love the company and the role over the whole interviewing process – from start to finish. This also means you need to keep on showing love during negotiation.
